WhatsApp Identifies Israeli Spyware Firm Paragon Solutions as Culprit in Global Targeting of Journalists and Civil Society Members

Meta’s WhatsApp has uncovered that Israeli spyware company Paragon Solutions targeted approximately 90 users, including journalists and civil society members, across 24 countries. The company has issued a cease-and-desist letter to Paragon and is considering legal action to protect user privacy.

The spyware, identified as “Graphite,” is engineered to infiltrate devices through “zero-click” attacks, which do not require any interaction from the target. Once installed, Graphite grants unauthorized access to the device’s contents, including encrypted messages, emails, and other sensitive information. This method of attack makes detection exceedingly difficult, posing significant challenges to cybersecurity defenses.

WhatsApp’s security team detected the malicious activity and promptly intervened to disrupt the spyware’s deployment. The company has since issued a cease-and-desist letter to Paragon Solutions and is actively exploring legal avenues to hold the firm accountable for its actions. In a public statement, WhatsApp affirmed its commitment to safeguarding user privacy and emphasized that it “will continue to protect people’s ability to communicate privately.”
